The Norway House Cree Nation, located on the banks of the Nelson River and Lake Winnipeg in northern Manitoba, is one of the largest and most historically significant Cree communities in Canada. Its history is deeply intertwined with the fur trade, treaty-making, and the enduring resilience of the Nehiyawak (Cree) people. From their ancient roots in the boreal forests of Manitoba to their leadership in cultural revitalization and self-determination, the Norway House Cree Nation stands as a symbol of strength and adaptability.

Norway House is a population centre of over 5,000 people, some 30 km (19 mi) north of Lake Winnipeg, on the eastern channel of the Nelson River, in the province of Manitoba, Canada.

Norway House has three meanings: the unincorporated community; the First Nation reserve of the Norway House Cree Nation (Kinosao Sipi Cree Nation); and both together.

Thus, Norway House has both a chief and a mayor.

The community is located 456 km (283 mi) by air north of Winnipeg208 km (129 mi) by air east of The Pas, and 190 km (120 mi) by air south of Thompson

To drive from Winnipeg, it is approximately 800 km (500 mi).

Norway House was a major depot of the Hudson’s Bay Company for most of the 19th century, and from the 1830s it was the seat of the Council of the Northern Department of Rupert’s Land.

Norway House Cree Nation (NHCN) is one of the largest Indigenous communities in Manitoba with a growing population of 9369 registered members, with 6883 members living on reserve

NHCN has long been recognized as a progressive and vibrant community, boasting a large number of amenities as its serves as a gateway, and central hub to Northern and Island lake communities of Manitoba.

The warehouse is the oldest warehouse of Red River frame construction in Western Canada and the oldest log structure in Manitoba on its style commonly used by the HBC incorporates a rare archway that cuts through the building doubling as the post’s riverside gateway

  • The Jail 1855-56 is Manitoba’s oldest extant lock-up, is a small structure built of local granite to the southeast of the ware-house
  • The Powder Magazine Remains 1837-38 located some distance from the post are the oldest in-situ ruins of a stone gunpowder storage facility in Western Canada and also are notable for their cut limestone elements unusual for the building’s type, time and place.
