Established as a small business well over a century ago, PCL Construction Inc. is now an international conglomerate, regarded as one of Canada’s largest contractors. Among many significant works, the Centre Block of Parliament rehabilitation project is announced by PCL’s recognizable green and yellow sign, drawing attention at the multifaceted construction site. The company story began with a carpenter in small-town Saskatchewan in 1906.
Founded by James Martin (?-?) and Ernest Edward “Ernie” Poole (1883-1964) at Stoughton, Saskatchewan in 1906, initially the firm specialized in building farmhouses, barns, and stores.
In 1907, following Martin’s retirement, the company was renamed E. E. Poole General Contractors and, three years later, it relocated to Rouleau, Saskatchewan. In 1913, the company was incorporated as the Poole Construction Company.
The company relocated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1932 and it continued to be operated by Poole until his death in 1964. Following his death, the company was operated by his sons until 1977 when it was sold to the Great-West Life Assurance Company and, in 1979, was renamed to PCL Construction Limited.
