For four decades Powder Blues has been Canada’s leading blues band. Their mix of swing, blues, jazz, rock & roll and r & b has an appeal so wide that people from seven to seventy often swing side by side at a Powder Blues concert. Over the years the band has toured non-stop through Canada, the United States and overseas, spreading a feel-good groove that makes people dance and shout.

Powder Blue’s debut album, ‘Uncut’, was shrugged off by the major labels woh told the band there was ‘no market for the blues’. Undiscouraged, the band sold it off stage and sent it to radio stations whose switchboards lit up with calls asking ‘who’s that?’ After selling 30,000 copies in a few weeks, the same record labels competed to distribute this ‘non-commercial’ product. To date, Powder Blues have sold over a million records worldwide.

Band highlights include winning Canada’s Juno, headlining the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, winning the Blues Foundation Award in Memphis, Tennessee and touring the US and Europe with legends like Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, James Brown, Albert Collins, James Cotton and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Leader, Tom Lavin has written many of the band’s best-known songs including ‘Doin’ It Right’ [‘On the Wrong Side of Town’] and ‘Boppin With the Blues’. Born in Chicago where he watched and worked with local bands and blues legends, Tom moved to Vancouver gigging nightly in the downtown nightclub scene. This led to work as a studio musician, songwriter, bandleader, record producer and film composer.

Tom has won BCMIA awards for ‘Guitarist, Singer, Songwriter and Producer of the Year’, a Juno award for ‘Best New Band’ and the American W.C. Handy award. He has over a dozen gold, and platinum records for Powder Blues, Prism, April Wine, Long John Baldry, Amos Garrett, and many others.

2018 is the band’s 40th Anniversary. Their more than a dozen CD titles and DVD continue to sell worldwide making Tom Lavin & the Legendary Powder Blues one of Canada’s longest-standing musical ambassadors.

DOMINIC KERWIN

A well-known and well-travelled performer in the Irish country music scene, Dominic Kirwan got his first bit of success as a performer when he won an Irish Dancing Champion at a young age. Born June 5, 1960, in Omagh, County Tyrone, Dominic Thomas Kirwan carried his love of performance into the creation of his first band, The Melody Boys, in 1979. The Melody Boys would gain a local following with their well-received live shows, but it was a solo success that Kirwan was after, and in 1985 he went off on his own and released a single and album. The single, “Alice In Wonderland,” was a moderate hit, and Kirwan quickly followed it up with a full-length album. In 1989, Kirwan scored a record deal with Ritz Records and would go on to share stages with some of country music’s leading artists, such as Kenny Rogers, Charley Pride, and Tammy Wynette. Over the years Kirwan would release more albums, a handful of DVDs, but — and most importantly — would continue to be a popular live act in his home country.

Dominic Kirwan has the ability to light up any stage that he commands with his warm charismatic approach, his welcoming Irish vocal tones, his genuine engagement with his audience and fans is truly something to be seen. His show covers many musical genres with an eclectic mix of Originality, Classic Country, Rock n Roll, an Irish ballad or two, bringing to you entertainment at its best.
Recently asked about his career to date and his fans, Dominic happily opened up to a warm smile, pondered for a moment and said “I’m lucky to have done what I’ve done to date, seen what I’ve seen, travelled to many beautiful parts of the world, met the many beautiful people I’ve met and to have had the support from the many wonderful fans I have throughout the world .. Along with family and friends, the fans have given me the opportunity to live this life and make my living, for that, I will always be eternally grateful”

With Dominic’s own unique vocal style and instantly recognizable voice, the future unknown to us all will still find a special place in audiences of today and tomorrow for this genuine, sincere and homely boy from Omagh.

DOZY, DEAKY, MITCH, & TICH

The band’s name stems from the nicknames of the members, and was thoroughly twisted and mangled by DJs and presenters alike. Well, you’ve got to admit it’s a bit of a mouthful, and it’s much easier to refer to them as The Dozies for short.

Another aspect that made them stand out from the crowd was their fashion sense. They would design their own clothes, get the material and have them sewn together by a lady in Cheshire. Later the designs would be copied and appear in some form in the Carnaby Street boutiques for public consumption. Check out some of the vintage footage of the band and you’ll be aware that they had quite an influence on the clothing scene at the time.
